Abbotsholme School in Derbyshire welcomed Allan back to run an advanced overseas expedition first aid course. The adventure sports staff participated in the two-day event, enhancing their first aid skills for challenging environments.
The day began with a quiz covering general first aid and medical conditions. Allan discussed essential medications like adrenaline, antihistamines for anaphylaxis, and GTN spray for heart attacks. Other topics included inhalers for asthma, buccal midazolam for epilepsy, and glucose for hypoglycaemia.
After lunch, participants practised casualty evaluation and the safe airway position. The session included techniques for managing spinal injuries. The group also learned how to treat bleeding, using realistic props. Allan demonstrated the use of tourniquets, haemostats, and splinting techniques with SAM splints and T-POD pelvic binders.
The evening ended with homework on overseas illnesses and hazards.
The second day began with splinting practice for broken femurs. Participants then reviewed their homework, covering topics such as snakebites, jellyfish stings, malaria, and altitude sickness.
Next, they practised CPR on various dummies, from infants to bariatric models. Each participant had a manikin to practise compressions and rescue breathing. They used different types of defibrillators, gaining hands-on experience with a variety of models.
Participants praised Allan’s welcoming approach and the realistic equipment used during training. Comments included:
“Allan is exceptionally knowledgeable and answered every question.”
“Excellent instruction and resources. All elements were covered thoroughly.”
“Practical scenarios helped reinforce our skills.”
