Cheshire Wildlife Trust Teams Up with Allan Shaw for Comprehensive Outdoor First Aid Training

Tree surgeons, wildlife volunteers, and office staff from Cheshire Wildlife Trust recently completed an intensive 16-hour Outdoor First Aid & EFAW & Forestry Course led by Allan Shaw at their Bickley Farm base in Cheshire. As the Trust’s recommended first aid training provider, Allan has delivered multiple courses over the years, ensuring their teams are fully prepared for both office and remote outdoor scenarios.

Tailored Training for Different Needs

The two-day course was structured to meet the varied needs of the participants:

  • Day One: Focused on Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), office staff joined to cover essential topics such as CPR, defibrillator use, safe airway positioning, first aid kits, and basic bandaging techniques.
  • Day Two: Tree surgeons and wildlife volunteers delved deeper into advanced outdoor first aid topics, including hypothermia management, tourniquet and haemostat use, and handling complex injuries in remote locations.

Realistic Scenarios to Build Confidence

The second day culminated in immersive, real-life scenarios designed to test participants’ skills under pressure. These included:

  • Responding to a car crash casualty
  • Managing an anaphylactic reaction and heart attack
  • Assisting a stroke victim and stabilising a broken hip
  • Supporting a hypoglycaemic casualty and someone experiencing a seizure

To close the session, participants tackled scenarios using dummies with catastrophic injuries, applying their new skills to manage life-threatening situations effectively.
