Today, Allan delivered an Emergency First Aid at Work course to representatives of the University of Derby’s Students’ Union sports clubs. Twelve students participated in the course, each responsible for various student groups, including women’s football, futsal, hiking, climbing, and tennis associations.
The course began with an overview of common illnesses such as meningitis, asthma, epilepsy, and diabetes. Allan provided advice on the safe use of medication in these settings. Students then practised bandaging techniques, using various prop heads, arms, and legs that Allan is known for.
After lunch, students participated in casualty evaluations, checking each other over and practising placing individuals into a safe airway position on their side. They then practised CPR on a range of dummies, including adult males, females, children, and babies, as well as bariatric models. Some dummies even indicated the depth of chest compressions.
Allan brought a collection of defibrillators, allowing students to familiarise themselves with six different types. The session concluded with a short discussion on mental health after providing first aid, a topic Allan values highly and includes in his mental health first aid courses.
Feedback from the participants highlighted Allan’s engaging teaching style and expertise:
