Last week, Allan delivered a 16-hour Outdoor First Aid course at Kilnworx Climbing Wall in Stoke-on-Trent.
The group included teachers, Duke of Edinburgh leaders, a climbing instructor, and a Forest School teacher.
Their varied backgrounds created thoughtful discussion and highly realistic scenario training across both days.
One candidate, Rolfe Oostra, travelled from the Pyrenees to attend the course.
Rolfe runs 360 Expeditions and holds the record for the highest single-handed mountain rescue on Everest.
He has also guided climbers on several of the world’s highest seven-thousand-metre peaks.
Rolfe spends most of his year leading expeditions in remote mountain environments. This was the second time he had trained with Allan.
Previously, Rolfe invited Allan to Tanzania to train his Kilimanjaro guides and porters.
Despite his experience, he recognises the importance of current, practical, and instinctive first aid skills. In remote settings, hesitation or outdated knowledge can make a critical difference.
What candidates covered
Across two days, participants practised:
Casualty assessment and scene safety
CPR for different ages and body types
Defibrillator use with multiple AED models
Severe bleeding control and tourniquet application
Spinal injury management and splinting
Medical emergencies, including asthma, epilepsy, and anaphylaxis
Environmental risks such as cold, heat, and delayed evacuation
Scenario-based learning, not classroom theory
Training focused on realistic, hands-on scenarios rather than slide-based teaching.
Candidates rotated through climbing and outdoor-specific incidents.
This approach mirrored the pressures and unpredictability of real emergencies.
These courses are for people responsible for others in areas with limited emergency support.
The same core principles always apply: stay calm, assess carefully, and act decisively.
By the end of the course, candidates had managed complex incidents as a team.
They strengthened both their technical skills and communication under pressure.
Allan delivers Outdoor and Expedition First Aid courses for:
Schools and colleges
Climbing centres
Youth organisations
International expedition companies
Each course is tailored to the specific environment and risks participants face.
