Today, Allan delivered a comprehensive paediatric first aid course to the nursery staff at City of Liverpool College. Nine dedicated staff members, responsible for caring for the children of college staff and students, participated in the training. The course was met with overwhelming approval, as the staff awarded Allan a near-perfect score of 539 out of 540 on their feedback forms—the single lost point attributed to the venue itself – which was their own venue!
Allan kicked off the course by covering essential topics related to childhood illnesses, including meningitis, asthma, epilepsy, and diabetes. He provided valuable guidance on the safe administration and storage of medication within a nursery environment. The staff then had the chance to practice bandaging using Allan’s well-known training props, which included various heads, arms, and legs.
After a well-deserved lunch break, the training continued with more hands-on activities. The staff engaged in casualty evaluations, practising how to check each other over and place individuals into a safe airway position. Next, they moved on to CPR practice using Allan’s extensive range of dummies. These included adult, child, and infant mannequins, as well as bariatric models and high-tech dummies that measured the depth of chest compressions.
Recognising the importance of being prepared for any situation, Allan also introduced the staff to six different types of defibrillators, allowing them to become familiar with a variety of equipment. To conclude, Allan facilitated a brief discussion on the mental health aspects of providing first aid—a topic he is particularly passionate about, as evidenced by his delivery of dedicated mental health first aid courses.
