Paddlesafe- 16-Hour Outdoor First Aid Course at Stanton Lake

16-Hour Outdoor First Aid Course at Stanton Lake

Watersports instructors from Hinckley Canoe Club successfully completed an outdoor watersports first aid course at Stanton Lake in Leicester. This course provided essential first aid skills tailored for outdoor and watersports activities.

Day 1: First Aid Basics and CPR Training

Day 1 started with a quiz covering general first aid medical conditions. The group discussed appropriate medications, including adrenaline and antihistamines for anaphylaxis, GTN spray and aspirin for heart attacks, inhalers for asthma, buccal midazolam for epilepsy, and glucose or glucagon for hypoglycaemia.

The team then practised choking techniques and CPR. CPR exercises were conducted on six different dummies, representing various ages, sizes, and body types, from babies to bariatric adults. Each participant received a manikin to practise both chest compressions and rescue breathing. Special focus was given to water rescue and drowning scenarios.

Participants were also shown three defibrillator types, and they had the opportunity to practise on an additional four models.

Afternoon Session: Casualty Evaluation and Injury Care

After lunch, the group practised casualty evaluation, safe airway positioning, and spinal injury care. The team trained in managing bleeding wounds using simulated body parts, practising the application of tourniquets and haemostats.

The day concluded with splinting exercises using SAM splints for twisted ankles, broken wrists, and arms. Candidates also practised with SAM and T-POD pelvic binders.

Day 2: Advanced Splinting and Realistic Scenarios

Day 2 began at 9 am with additional splinting practice, specifically for broken femurs. The group reflected on a quiz around outdoor first aid as part of a homework task.

In the afternoon, the team engaged in practical scenarios to apply their learning. Scenarios included a car crash, amputations, open chest wounds, falls from height, epilepsy, hypothermia, hypoglycaemia, and drowning situations.
