For the past three days, Thornton College in Liverpool served as the venue for an intensive HSE First Aid at Work course, expertly delivered by Allan. This marks the second time Allan has conducted training at the college in recent years.
The course was meticulously tailored to meet the specific needs of the lecturers and support staff, including specialised Midazolam training, crucial for managing epilepsy among students. Allan also covered other medical conditions in great depth, such as diabetes, asthma, and anaphylaxis, ensuring the staff felt confident in handling a wide range of scenarios.
Each day began with a quiz to reinforce the previous day’s learning, followed by body checks and recovery position practice. Allan added an engaging twist with a fun version of the radio quiz “Just a Minute,” adapted to discuss medical conditions. Prizes of Kit Kats were awarded to those who successfully explained the condition at the end of the minute, adding a light-hearted element to the serious training.
On the final day, the staff participated in various outdoor scenarios designed to complement the classroom learning. They had the opportunity to role-play as both casualties and first aiders, using equipment provided to simulate real-life situations.
